Mascot Mania Misfortune: Americans Fall to Muckdogs in Seven Innings
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Niagara Falls Americans suffered a 15-3 mercy-rule loss to the Batavia Muckdogs on Monday night at Sal Maglie Stadium. Jaxsyn Moritz, a rising sophomore at Erie Community College, made his first start as an American against a Muckdogs team riding a four-game winning streak entering the night. Batavia scored four runs in the top of the first and never looked back. The Americans answered with a run in the bottom of the opening frame. Justin Gladfelter led off with a walk, advanced to third on a wild pitch and a stolen base, and then scored on a groundout to shortstop by Matthew Ganschow. Moritz suffered the loss, lasting just two innings and allowing seven earned runs on four hits, with three walks and one strikeout. Jase Burdon followed Moritz, pitching two clean innings and allowing only two hits, with one walk and one strikeout. Mitchell Canuel took over for the next three frames, giving up eight runs (three earned) on seven hits, with two walks and two strikeouts. The Americans committed an error in both the fifth and sixth innings, which helped the Muckdogs extend their lead to 14 runs. The Americans’ offense was held hitless until the bottom of the sixth, when Tyler Foxcroft lined a single into the left-center field gap. He came around to score on a Ganschow triple, which brought in two total runs. The Americans finished with just three hits in the loss. Links
