Americans Tie Power City Athletics in Out of League Game

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Niagara Falls Americans tied Power City Athletics, a travel

baseball program based in Niagara Falls, N.Y., 8-8 in a seven-inning exhibition game on

Thursday night at Sal Maglie Stadium.

Power City wasted no time in the opening frame, scoring the game’s first run after just two

pitches on a double and a wild pitch. The Athletics added another run in the inning on two more

hits, a walk and two stolen bases.

In the bottom of the first, Justin Gladfelter led off with a hit-by-pitch before stealing second base.

Dominick Zangardi later drove in Gladfelter with a single to tie the game at one.

After a scoreless second inning, Gladfelter lined a leadoff triple down the right-field line in the

third and came around to score on a wild pitch later in the frame.

Power City answered with a run in the fourth after Camel Brundage hit a two-out infield single

to the left side that Anthony Savino stopped from trickling into the outfield.

Owen McCandless started on the mound for the Americans, tossing four innings while allowing

three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Pinch-hitting for Justin Gladfelter, Aiden Mroz reached on an error to begin the fifth inning

before scoring on a David Harris single. The at-bat marked Mroz’s first of the season. Following

Harris’ single, Loagan Stickler ripped a triple to deep right-center field to score Harris. Stickler

later crossed the plate on a wild pitch to extend the Americans’ lead to 7-3.

In the sixth, Mroz blooped a single down the right field line to open the inning. Zangardi later

chopped an RBI single down the third-base line to score Mroz.

Facing an 8-3 deficit in the seventh, Power City rallied as the first eight batters reached base

safely. After two singles and two walks, Camel Brundage hit a bases-clearing triple to left field,

making it a one-run game. Zangardi attempted to make a diving catch on the play but was forced

to exit the game with a right shoulder injury before the next pitch was thrown. Brundage later

scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at eight. However, with the bases loaded and one out, the

Americans turned a 1-2-3 double play to escape the jam and preserve the 8-8 tie. Power City

scored five runs on four hits in the inning, erasing the deficit.

Khyree Harmon relieved McCandless and pitched the final three innings. All five earned runs

and four hits he allowed came in the seventh inning. Harmon finished the outing with five walks

and three strikeouts.

Zangardi finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, one run scored and a stolen base.

Justin Gladfelter went 1-for-1 with a triple, two runs scored and a stolen base.

The Americans stole five bases as a team, their most in a game since July 11 against the Olean

Oilers, where they also recorded five.

The seven-inning exhibition matchup did not count toward the Americans’ Perfect Game

Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) record.
