Americans Take Season Opener in Batavia

BATAVIA, NY - The Niagara Falls Americans took their season opener 10-8 tonight, June 4th, when they traveled to Batavia to take on the Muckdogs. The Americans will take an early lead in the season series against their division rival, and one of the perennial top contenders in the PGCBL. This win moves Niagara Falls to 1-0, and Batavia moves to 2-2.

Ian Huang, Grant Moore, and Nick Paszt highlighted the Americans offensive efforts. Huang went 4-for-5 at the plate, driving in three runs, and crossing home twice himself. Moore saw five plate appearances, recording two hits, a walk, and driving in two RBIs. Paszt additionally had two hits and two RBIs in his five at bats, with one of his hits being a triple.

CJ Hurley was the Opening Day starter for the Americans. Hurley pitched four innings, striking out five before turning the ball over to Carter Hall. Hall would pitch two innings, and would earn the win. Keegan Bazinet, Jake Roscher, and Brady Toney would finish the final stretch of the game for Niagara Falls, with each pitching one full inning of the final three. Bazinet and Roscher would each allow one hit, with Roscher striking out two, and Bazinet striking out one. In the 9th, Toney would take over the mound and record all three batters out with 14 pitches, one strikeout, and earning a save.

Batavia’s offensive performance was fueled by Cooper Fesh, Sean Mindas, and Braedon Reina. Fesh recorded a hit on three of four at-bats, scoring a run each time he saw baserunning action. Mindas achieved two hits in five at bats, scoring both times he reached base. Reina had five plate appearances, earning one hit, one walk, and two RBIs.

Walker Glyshaw started on the mound for the Muckdogs, pitching 2.2 innings before exiting. Glyshaw came out strong in the first two innings, allowing only two base runners, one reaching by a hit, and another by error, and striking out two. Things would take a turn in the 3rd inning, as Glyshaw would give up seven hits and seven runs, all earned, before Ervin Hollandsworth would take over. Hollandsworth would then pitch 2.1 hitless innings, striking out four along the way. Bryceton Berry entered the game in the 6th inning and would allow three hits, and three runs, two earned. Berry would be credited with the loss. Jaden Sherwood entered in the 7th inning, and would pitch the remainder of the game for the Muckdogs. Sherwood was effective, allowing only one hit and one walk in his time on the mound, as well as striking out two batters.

Both teams would come out to strong defensive starts, with neither team scoring in the 1st. The 2nd inning saw only one American reach base when Carmen Panaro walked. In the bottom of the 2nd, Batavia was on their back foot with 2 outs recorded, before Sean Mindas would score on a wild pitch that was on a swinging strikeout. Pitcher CJ Hurley would stop the bleed quick, striking out the next batter.

The Americans would come out hot in the top of the 3rd. The inning started with Ian Huang doubling, and then Nolan Jackson reaching on a hit by pitch. Greydon Miller would then hit a single, driving in Huang to score the first run of the 2025 Niagara Falls Americans season. This was only the beginning of the scoring, as Nick Paszt would hit a triple deep in center field that would allow both Miller and Jackson to cross home. Grant Moore continued the streak with a single, driving in Miller. Following a single by Carmen Panaro, the Muckdogs would then record their first and second outs of the inning. Christopher Guzaldo would find the offensive spark again by hitting an RBI single. Huang would come back to the plate and record his second hit of the 3rd inning, a 2 RBI single. After the seventh run of the inning, the Muckdogs changed their arm on the mound, and would then strikeout the following batter, ending the strong inning for the Americans.

Batavia would start to chip away at the Americans lead in the bottom of the 3rd, as they would soon find themselves with bases loaded and two outs. Jackson Inman would take advantage of the opportunity and hit a 2 RBI single. The next batter faced would fly out to right field, ending the Muckdogs chance to keep tallying on.

Following a 1-2-3 inning by Batavia’s defense, they found themselves in a familiar scenario with bases loaded with two outs. This time, Braedon Reina would follow the same path as the 3rd inning, by hitting a 2 RBI single. The Americans would again shut down the following batter.

After another 1-2-3 inning for the Americans batters, Batavia would continue their run in the 5th inning, and would score back-to-back runs by wild pitch, and tying the game back up.

The Americans would not allow the game to stay tied for long, as the top of the 6th saw several scoring plays for Niagara Falls. The second batter of the inning, Ian Huang, would hit another RBI single allowing Christopher Guzaldo to cross home. Soon after, Greydon Miller would step to the plate with bases loaded and would hit a single that allowed two runners to score, earning one RBI and scoring the eventual game-winning run.

The Muckdogs would score the final run in the game when Cooper Romich stepped to the plate in the 8th inning. Romich had bases loaded and one out. He would hit a ground ball and reach on a fielder’s choice, and while the Americans defense recorded an out at 2nd base, they could get Romich and one runner would score.
