Americans Surrender Lead in Seventh, Lose Sixth Straight
ST. CATHARINES, Ontario — After carrying a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, the
Niagara Falls Americans allowed five runs over the last two innings, falling 6-2 to the Niagara
Ironbacks on Monday at George Taylor Field.
Following a scoreless first frame, Adam Weiss and Thomas Marcotte hit back-to-back doubles in
the top of the second to draw first blood and give the Americans a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Dominick Zangardi led off with a triple down the right field line, and
Matthew Ganschow brought him home with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
This was the first time since June 17—also against the Ironbacks—that the Americans recorded
three or more extra-base hits in a game.
The Ironbacks scored their first run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out double to right field,
cutting the Americans’ lead in half.
Niagara then got a runner on base in the next inning, prompting the Americans to make a
pitching change.
Tyler Foxcroft made his first start and second appearance of the season on the mound, while
Porter Slattery came out of the bullpen, making a team high eleventh appearance this year.
Entering with two outs, Slattery gave up three runs on three hits and two walks in the inning—
two were charged to him and one to Foxcroft—as the Ironbacks took a 4-2 lead.
Foxcroft pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits with five walks
and one strikeout.
The Americans were unable to score any more runs, while the Ironbacks tacked on two insurance
runs in the eighth.
Slattery was credited with the loss, moving his record to 0-2 on the season.
Adam Weiss finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and is now batting .400 in July. Thomas Marcotte
and Matthew Ganschow each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Americans have now lost six games in a row, and fell to 9-18, while the Ironbacks have won
their last two and improved to 12-14-1. The season series between the two teams is now tied at
three games apiece.
