Americans Blown Out in First-Ever Matchup with Olean Oilers
OLEAN, N.Y — The Niagara Falls Americans’ offense struggled mightily in an eight-run loss against the Olean Oilers on Saturday night at Bradner Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. The Americans took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Cooper Rowell worked a four-pitch walk and came around to score on a fielder’s choice by Adam Weiss. However, that would be the only lead the Americans held in the contest. Vincent Favata made his second start of the season for the Americans. After a clean opening frame, Favata surrendered six runs (three earned) in the bottom of the second. He lasted just two innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits while walking three, and striking out one. Porter Slattery came on in relief in the third and gave up two more runs. He tossed three innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. In the sixth, David Harris worked a leadoff walk, and Dominick Zangardi followed with a single to right field that ultimately scored Harris after an errant throw. Zangardi extended his hitting streak to six games with the single, but it was the only other run the Americans’ offense would scratch across in the game. Matthew Ganschow came in from left field and tossed two scoreless innings, allowing no hits while recording three strikeouts and one walk. Loagan Stickler fired a scoreless ninth inning for the Americans, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Derek Gesmondi finished 2-for-4 with a triple, recording his fourth multi-hit game of the season. With the 10-2 win, the Oilers improved to 6-5, while the Americans fell to 3-6.
