Tarp Skunks Edge Out Americans 3-1 in Pitchers Duel

NIAGARA FALLS, NY - The Niagara Falls Americans hosted the Jamestown Tarp Skunks in the first of three consecutive matchups between the teams, falling by a score of 1-3 in a low-hit affair. Jamestown has now won four of seven games against Niagara Falls, improving to a 22-12 record. The Americans fall to 24-14 overall.

Niagara Falls tallied just two hits in the contest, with Grant Moore, Tommy Mathay, and Nick Paszt having the best stat lines. Moore and Mathay each batted 1-of-3 with a single. Paszt reached base on a hit by pitch, stealing a base and coming around to score the only Americans run of the day.

Despite the loss, the Americans turned in two good pitching performances. John Ondus pitched the first 6.0 innings, allowing all three runs, just two earned, and striking out two of his 26 batters faced. Aiden Klimtzak threw the final 3.0 innings scoreless and hitless, allowing two walks and striking out one.

The Tarp Skunks’ winning performance was led by Nathan Borchardt, Ben Slanker, and Brady McGuire. Borchardt and Slanker each batted 1-of-3 with a walk and one RBI. Borchardt’s hit was a double, while Slanker’s was a single. McGuire also batted 1-of-3 with a walk, turning in two stolen bases and scoring two of Jamestown’s three runs.

Colin Bolla pitched a complete game for Jamestown, allowing one run on two hits and one walk. Across 30 batters faced, Bolla struck out eight, earning his second win of the season. He threw a total of 117 pitches in the contest.

Jamestown struck early, scoring in the top of the 1st inning. Brady McGuire worked a full count walk before stealing second base. The next batter grounded out to the 1st baseman, allowing McGuire to advance to 3rd base. With one out and a run 90 feet away, Ben Slanker hit into a groundout to the second baseman, but scored McGuire to give Jamestown the early 1-0 lead.

Neither team broke the 1-0 score until the top of the 6th, when Jamestown extended their lead. McGuire again led off the inning getting on base, this time with a single through the left side. He again stole 2nd base during the next at bat, which ended with a strikeout. Slanker grounded out again, this time advancing McGuire to 3rd. The next batter, Justin Bremner batted a ball to right center field, reaching 1st on a single, scoring McGuire and additionally advancing to 2nd on a fielding error by the center fielder. Nathan Borchardt hit a similar ball, doubling to center field and scoring Bremner. The next batter flew out to right field, ending the inning.

Niagara Falls responded with their only run of the game in the bottom of the inning. Nick Paszt led off the inning reaching 1st on a hit by pitch. He advanced twice during the next at bat, first stealing 2nd base, and then tagging up and taking 3rd when the batter flew out to right field. With pressure on the defense, a wild pitch allowed Paszt to come home and score the only Americans run, and final run of the day for either team.
