Auburn Shuts Down Americans 11-2, Sweeps Season Series
AUBURN, NY - The Niagara Falls Americans traveled to Auburn to faceoff with the Doubledays. Auburn continues to have the Americans’ number, as with a 11-2 victory, the Doubledays have won all three of the regular season matchups for these teams. Niagara Falls will drop to 20-12 on the season, while Auburn climbs to 17-10-4.
The Americans tallied just four hits on the night, spread between Allen Ramos, Connor Kiefer, and Grant Moore. Ramos hit a two-RBI single in one of his three at bats. Kiefer batted 2-of-3, including a double. Moore was the final American with a hit, achieving a single across his three at bats, as well as stealing a base.
Niagara Falls threw three pitchers in the contest, with Nolan Jackson pitching the first 3.0 innings. Jackson allowed eight runs, six earned, striking out five of his 21 batters faced. Robert Leach entered for the next 3.0, allowing three runs and striking out four. Carmen Panaro pitched the final 2.0 innings scoreless, allowing just one hit and no walks across nine batters.
The Doubledays added up to 13 hits on the night, highlighted by the performances of Adam Sullivan, Mark Gialluisi, and Tyler ViVacqua. Sullivan batted 3-of-5 with three RBIs, and stole a base. Gialluisi hit two doubles in five at bats, both doubles drove in two runs, for a total of four RBIs. ViVacqua batted 2-of-4, with one RBI double, as well as a stolen base.
Owen Birchard and Griffin White were the only Auburn pitchers to appear, pitching effectively and combining for 15 strikeouts. Birchard pitched 5.0 innings, allowing two runs and striking out eight of his 20 batters faced. White pitched the final 4.0, allowing just one hit and two walks, and striking out seven of his 15 batters.
Auburn came out hot in the bottom of the 1st, with Tyler ViVacqua leading off with a single to right field. ViVacqua advanced to third on a steal, followed by a passed ball, before walking Bobby Haarde to put runners on the corners with no outs. Mark Gialluisi opened the scoring with a double down the left field line that scored both ViVacqua and Haarde. Anthony DeCesare singled to against put runners on the corners. A strikeout put the first out on the board before an error allowed Adam Sullivan to reach first, as well as for Gialluisi to score. Gianni DiCerbo walked to load the bases before a walk on Sam Meyer pushed DeCesare over home plate for the fourth and final run of the inning.
Both of the Americans' runs came in the top of the 3rd. After a leadoff strikeout, Connor Kiefer doubled down the left field line to start the offensive spark. The next batter, Tommy Mathay, walked before both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Grant Moore. With runners in scoring position and two outs, Allen Ramos took advantage, singling to center field and scoring both baserunners. The next batter grounded out to the first baseman, ending the inning.
After quick half innings by both teams, Auburn came up to bat in the bottom of the 4th and turned in a six-run inning. Sam Meyer worked a full count walk to leadoff the inning, and after a stolen base and single by Charlie Wortham, Auburn had runners on the corners with no outs. Alex Vasquez next stepped into the box, hitting a bases-clearing double down the left field line. Vasquez was then driven in himself on a double to right center by ViVacqua. After the explosive start of the inning by Auburn, Niagara Falls turned to Robert Leach to take over on the mound. Haarde welcomed Leach by working a walk, allowing Gialluisi to hit the second bases-clearing double of the game. After the next two batters were both retired, Sullivan knocked in Gialluisi, Auburn's final run of the inning, on a single through the left side.
Auburn scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the 6th inning. The inning began with DeCesare singling to center field before stealing second base two batters later. With one out and a runner on 2nd, Sullivan drove in DeCesare with a single through the left side.
