Americans Shutout in First Doubleheader Game Against Pioneers

NIAGARA FALLS, NY - In game one of a home doubleheader against the Elmira Pioneers, the Niagara Falls Americans fell by a score of 0-3. Despite Elmira not having a fantastic day at the plate, the Americans’ bats were not able to get going either, tallying just four hits in the seven inning game. With the loss, Niagara Falls drops to 14-8 on the season, while Elmira climbs to 12-9.

Niagara Falls’ four hits were tallied by three players. Chris Guzaldo was the only multi-hit American, batting 2-of-3. Shane Pray hit a double, the team’s only extra base hit, in one of his two at bats, reaching base a second time on a hit by pitch. Gavyn Boyle was the final American to tally a hit, batting 1-of-3.

CJ Hurley pitched the full game for the Americans. Across 7.0 innings, Hurley allowed six hits, no walks, and struck out three. All three runs were earned, leading to Hurley being tagged with his second loss of the season, moving his record to 1-2.

The Pioneers’ winning output was led by Cooper Smith, Michael Palmer, and Aidan Grabowski. Each of the three players hit a double, Smith being the only to notch multiple hits. Smith batted 2-of-3, tallying two RBIs. Palmer drove in the final Elmira RBI, scoring one run himself. Grabowski batted 1-of-3, scoring another run.

Two pitcher stepped to the mound in Elmira’s combined shutout performance. Robert Boing pitched the first 5.0 innings, earning his first win of the season. Boing allowed four hits and three walks across his 22 batters faced. Bryce Mashanic pitched the final 2.0 innings, earning his first save of the seasons. Mashanic allowed one baserunner on a hit by pitch, but recorded an out on the other six batters he faced.

The Pioneers started early, with Aidan Grabowski doubling, followed by a Ty Martineau single to put runners on the corners with no outs. After a fielder’s choice on TJ Gramesty put the first out on the board, Michael Palmer hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Grabowski. The next batter, Cooper Smith, hit another single down the right field line, scoring Gramesty from first base to give Elmira the 2-0 lead after the top of the 1st.

Elmira added one to their lead in the top of the 4th. After a leadoff groundout, Palmer doubled to right field to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Smith continued his day by batting another ball to right field, scoring Palmer. The lead stood as 3-0 through the remainder of the game.
